A Dog’s Love

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 3:40 pm

This is a poem written 15 years ago by great friend of mine Ms.  Michelle B.  It was about her feelings about a new 3 month old puppy she just picked up.  This puppy died this weekend – 15 years old of massive cancer.   What an insightful poem.

To Lulu Longsnout Goodbelly, written when she was 3 months old

On the Short Lives of Dogs

My sweet dog,
you’re unaware of this, I know,
but I brood about your meager time
with sadness and regret.

The irony
you’re still just a pup,
commencing your bright passage,
scarcely mitigates my sorrow.

I’m mindful
how fleeting, how hopelessly short
your stay with me will surely seem,
and then you will be taken.

My mourning
precedes that bleakest of seasons,
forlornly missing you, my dog,
though you dream here in my arms.

Just now,
ephemeral creature of infinite love,
you sleep serenely, unconcerned,
forever spared such somber reflections.

I’ll hold you
when that most final of good nights
envelopes you softly at the last,
my dog ever faithful.
